Louisa and I went on a little Holiday to Staithes in North Yorkshire at the end of January. We stayed in a tiny cottage 20 steps from the sea with no Internet and no mobile phone reception. It was the most relaxing holiday I’ve had in years. Usually we’re storming all over whichever city we’re staying in to make sure we see everything.

Hey there John, just thought I’d swing by and say that I’ve been on holiday several times to Staithes (well, Cowbar) and stayed in that same house with the red door (I’m presuming it’s that one, or the one next door). Unfortunately we haven’t been in a couple of years because the owner who rented it out told us it was being sold and so we presumed we wouldn’t get another chance to go. But if you’ve been, there is still hope :D
We are off this Saturday to Auntie Annies Cottage (red door) . Love Staithes
and come every year.The owner of this cottage was especially friendly and we had a peep when we stayed at the Long House last year.Looks great.

The red door cottage had a sign in it saying “holiday cottage for rent”. In fact, pretty much every house on that strip was available for renting.

Yes, we stayed at the blue door house – Northside cottage.
It was really nice, especially with the fire blazing. I would heartily recommend an out of season visit.

heya! Just to say I have also been to staithes many time on holiday. My family own and work at the sea-drift café on the front. I have been going th staithes every year since I was born! In fact I just got back from there yesterday! I also stayed in a cottage on cowbar at the top called sea haven. I love stathes, it is a fantastic wee place!

Just looking at cottages available and the photo’s of Staithes as I lived there for 10 years, feeling very nostalgic and missing the place awfully after looking at your cottages, it really is a wonderful place to both visit and live, looking at your website makes me realise just how much I miss the village, the lifestyle and the people. I will definitely be looking into renting a cottage here, thank you
Love staithes -holidayed there as a child and my girls love it now -aged 12 and 18.Brilliant place both in the summer and out of season-stayed in lots of cottages-you cant go wrong!!!!
Just had a fabulous week staying at Lingdale cottage which is small and lovely. Staithes is a perfect place to get back to simple things and simple pleasures..cant wait to get back asap

Oh, we are staying in the orange/ terracotta coloured cottage.
I first went to Staithes with my mother 48 years ago when I was 11 years old and I loved it, I would walk around Staithes on my own and hardly saw anyone around back then except for the seagulls which were very noisy all day back then.
I have always returned to Staithes now and again for a visit because I have always loved going there and I am drawn to the place for it’s beauty and peace.
I stayed in one of the cottages in Staithes with a friend more recently and my friend had a ghostly encounter with a spirit, she was so afraid that she slept on the floor beside my bed on our last evening there, and no I am not prepared to say which cottage we stayed in.
my kids booked me a cottage in staithes for my birthday it was lovely and we went back later in the year the locals are so friendly they may you feel that your at home going back in april for my honeymoon it just the perfect place
I live in Denver Co,but I was born in Middlesbrough. My parents had some friends called Caroline & Bret who owned Greystones about 28 years ago and I would stay with them for weeks at a time I absolutley love Staiths.These pictures bring back so many memories.
I am now 69 years old & have vivid childhood memories of my first holiday ever.Holidays of any kind were hard to come by & my first was spent at Staithes. The sites and the sounds still remain with me to this day. I have been back many times to this wonderful location.For total peace and quiet (except for the Gulls) you wont find a more idyllic place
We are just back from a few days in Staithes. We have a house in the village which I used to live in during the week as I worked in the area. Unfortunately my job has moved on, so we now enjoy it when we can and let it out to friends and family.
I drive for a living so leaving the car at the top and walking home to a place with no mobile reception …. bliss.
Our friends say it brings their families closer together, with their children actually “playing out” away from video games.
And the Royal George is the best pub in the world.
Glad to read that people have found how magical Staiths is.I was born in Unity House in church Street,which my grand-dad owned and also Kirk Cottage next door,My mother is in a school photo in the little Chapel museum in the high street,her name being Maggie Gibbons.My grand-dad was the cobbler of staithes and his workshop was the little shed type building on the side of Unity House,my great grandmother was the midwife of the village,her name being Elizabeth Earl.My uncle used to keep the Royal George in the 1950s.Happy days………………….

Hi……yes lots of interesting things to tell you about our familys lives at Unity house.It was a very musical house,with Uncle Ernie on the Mandolin ,Grandad on the accordian and auntie Dorothy playing the piano.Also alot of great sadness too,Iwould love to write a book about them all.As I mentioned it was the gibbons family.Myself ,sister and brother in law ,have booked a week 19 june 2011, so will pop in . I see Anna stayed in Flither cottage…just as a matter of interest,the name Flither comes from the women of Staithes who had the job of baiting the nets,Flithers is the bait they used,a Flither being a Limpet.Most of the cottages in Staithes were named after boats and ships….interesting eh!
Very interested to read about Staithes,one of my best places to be in my life,we used to look after the Royal George Pub in the late 60/70 when our relations who ran it at the time(Ron and Iris) went on holiday,I used to know the beck like the back of my hand!Live in Dubai now and still miss Staithes,will end up back there one day,dead or alive!
Oh no.. I love getting out of Leeds and in to North Yorkshire, but looks like this place aint going to be too quiet with all you guys there. Sheesh kababs! Right.. i’m going to google east yorkshire instead. (nice pic tho)
We’ve been going to Staithes for fifteen years and love it. Agree with that comment above about leaving your car and mobile signal at the top of the hill – leave modern life behind. We were lucky enough to get the chance to buy a house on Church Street just yards from the sea last year, which we’re letting out. See our website for details.

I’ve been to Staithes a few times now and have stayed in the huts at Trig Point 49 where my partners parents stay most weekends. Love it up there, remote and quiet :)
We’ve heard some stories about things people have seen in the huts up there and out on the fields.
Does anyone know where i could get more information about any ghostly sightings in Staithes? We are very interested to know some more about them.

Kirsty, you are right about Ghosts in Staithes, but have you noticed none of the current or past cottage owners in Staithes have made mention of this.
Staithes is my favorite place because it is so beautiful….
Im writing this in Southport on the Lancashire Coast.I love living here but NOTHING compares to the visits i have made to staithes in the past.I had a friend who lived on Church St-her name was cath? She had cats and possibly a dog(its a long while ago) I know she has moved and wondered if any one had an address i could contact her on? Her cottage was VERY cluttered but that just seemed to add to the charm!!!!
There was a guy who lived I think,in RUBY COTTAGE on the High st? Didnt he tell tall tales in The Cobbler’s? Bout 1994 or 95? Had a beard name of David i think? Not the beard!!
My first visit there was in 1989.I WON a short holiday there in a contest in Bradford.

Not sure if I’d cope without a mobile phone signal and I wonder if it’s changed since the original posting.

It reckons I can get a good O2 network outdoors, variable indoors for basic calls and texts but no fast connection to support laptops or smartphones.
I have stayed in Staithes a couple of times now and love it, I have stayed in the same cottage both times and have had visits on all occassions from a variety of ghostly figures from the past, I was there last night and had a visit from a young boy with a bowl hair cut, dressed in clothes from the 40’s tank top, shirt with his sleeves rolled up and short pants. I have also seen a youn girl with a bonnet on and what can only be described as a witch like old woman. I also over heard a couple talking about ghosts in the local pub, I am keen to learn if anyone else has experienced anything at Staithes
Oh how ace – I’m going to Staithes overnight on Saturday but staying at a pub, I read online after I’d booked it that there’s the ghost of a young boy in one of the rooms that are booked out. My husband doesn’t believe in the paranormal so I’m hoping something will happen to make him change his mind as I get fed up of him taking the mick out of my Thursday evening viewing on Really! Staithes looks so charming, I’ve had a real pull towards it in the last few weeks and knew I had to come and see if it was as pretty as it’s photographs. I can’t believe I’ve never visited before when I only live just outside York. Hope the weather stays fine :) I’m sooo excited (can you tell I don’t get out much?! lol)
Iain: If you keep on experiencing hallucinations like that I’d recommend you get along to your GP.
We stayed in the double fronted cottage next door to the lifeboat station. Had some wonderful rough weather whilst there in September 2010, the sea coming right over to the cottage. Lovely place, had really good food in the restaurant and the pub. I enjoy watercolour painting and the cottage had lovely watercolour paintings done by a local artist around all the rooms.
