John Leach vs. Debian

This document brings you information regarding me, my new PowerBook G4 and the Debian "Woody" Linux distro.

I'm going to just keep adding little nuggets of information here for my own, and any other interesting interested Internet parties' interest.

Apt repositories

Here is the contents of my /etc/apt/sources.list for your information.

deb http://www.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free

Changing the GTK 1 theme with GTK 2 installed

The gtk 2 control centre doesn't change the gtk 1 themes. You can either edit your ~/.gtkrc file (which is a bit fiddly) or use the "gtk-theme-switch" utility from apt. Install it and run "switch". It's pretty straightforward from there

System boot scripts

To control what services/daemons start on boot you need to manipulate the files in /etc/init.d and /etc/rc2.d. This guy says it far better than I could.

Evolution 1.3/1.4

The Ximian Evolution 1.3 packages are available on the apt repository, but not for powerpc. I downloaded the source packages and built the debs to give us powerpc owners access to the antialiased e-mail experience. They are from the 1.3.92 version sources, which was RC1 apparently. You can find them in my evolution downloads directory UPDATE:The official Debian Evolution package is now source version 1.4, so these are no longer needed.
